Right now I intend to major in Architecture when I get to college. I have always wanted a career with a variety of applications, and for that reason architecture appeals to me because of its reconciliation of science, technology, and art. In the future I would like to be in charge of planning for international architecture firms to build medical facilities, schools, libraries, and more infrastructure to help with the prosperity of other nations that are not as privileged as others.
One famous architect is Frank Lloyd Wright, who was considered one of the greatest and controversial artistic minds of the 20th century. Although Wright never graduated high school, he took courses in civil engineering at the University of Wisconsin later in his life. In his time, architecture was not as valued as much as it is today and so it required little to no education and experience to pursue. Inspired by the farmland he grew up on in the Midwest, Wright eventually moved to Chicago and worked as an architect under a small firm just years before opening his own firm in 1893. His most famous works are associated with the "Prairie Style" of architecture which entails low, flat buildings that have limited interior walls to maximize their space. Wright often spoke of how he wanted his projects to connect people with the natural world and prevent a disconnection due to superficial and materialistic aspects of life. In his mind, a building was meant to mirror living organisms as a connection to their environment, and "as a form, evolved as an organism evolves, fitted to its environment, expressive of its purpose". He was philosophical, culturally-aware, innovative, ambitious, and revolutionary.
What I admire most about Frank Lloyd Wright is his notion that the things we create and the places we go should never be disconnected from our natural environment. Often, architects are though of as rich snobs who fake a true artistic vision for profit and recognition. However, Wright is an excellent example of how this discipline can be used to convey a deeper message and be a benefit to the culture of a society. I chose to research him because of this and because of my admiration of his style.
